Ceramics Has Finally Arrived at Design39

This year Design39Campus is offering ceramics as a deep dive. If you didn’t already know, ceramics is class where you can create things out of clay, you shape it, fire it in the kiln, glaze it, and fire it again. They would’ve had ceramics sooner but the kiln took longer to arrive than expected.

In ceramics they use clay, specialized tools to make designs, and special paint called glazes that will make all the creations look like they’re coated in glass.

Lately, in ceramics the students have made coil, slab, and pinch pots.  Working with clay takes a while, so the students have to make an entire project in one day because the clay must dry before you can put your project in the kiln to be fired. It has to dry for at least a week. On top of that, it takes nine hours for the clay to fire, and it has to fire before and after the glaze is applied.

In the near future Mrs. Eveleth, the ceramics LED, would like to create pots and other clay items for the school, but until then, the students have been making their own creations, such as little animals, bowls, pencil holders, and more.

Interested in ceramics? Well you’re in luck, because Mrs. Eveleth has announced that ceramics will indeed be offered again in the spring for 6th and 7th grade students. Of course, you don’t have to be in 6th and 7th grade to have some fun with clay, the kiln is open for any other class to use. If you’ve got a love for art, ceramics could be the ideal deep dive for you.
